A player of admired hockey of high school (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) with the brilliant future foolishly takes a walk of night with his friend of girl and two other friends with his lighthouses of with devastating results. They leave the ancient athlete with a cerebral damage that prevents it from being remembered of many things of extensive periods of time. To pay, he guards notes in a small exercise book to help it in remembering what he must do. He also lives with a friend blind (Jeff Daniels) who helps it. Obviously, with the mental incapacitação, he is incompetent of having the significant work. So he works like a man of cleaning of night in a bank.
